Radio Instruction to Strengthen Education (RISE)
The objective of the RISE Project is to expand learning opportunities for pre-primary and primary age children in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Although significant progress has been made in enrolling children in formal schools, there are still a large number of overage and underserved children who need support to promote their successful transition to, and progression in, primary school.
To reach these children in Zanzibar, RISE is developing and adapting Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) programs and learning materials for pre-primary, Standard One and Standard Two levels. RISE assists remote communities to establish non-formal learning centers and trains local community members as mentors to guide students through the broadcasts and post-broadcast activities. IRI lessons are also delivered to students in formal Standard One and Two classrooms. On student learning assessments, learners participating in the IRI programs have demonstrated significant learning gains compared to non-participants.
In Mainland Tanzania, RISE assists isolated pastoralist and coastal communities to establish Standards One to Four Mambo Elimu Community Learning Centers (MECLCs) and trains community mentors. Through IRI lessons, children are provided with accelerated, early primary education to enable successful transition to primary schools and to achieve basic literacy. In the northern districts, RISE is piloting IRI programs via portable media player technology as well as radio technology. Read more >>
