HIV/AIDS

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to devastate families and communities around the world, and many people still lack the basic information and skills to fight the disease. As schools try to offer effective HIV/AIDS education, they also grapple with the loss of teachers due to HIV/AIDS illness and death as well as innumerable AIDS orphans.

Collaborating with local experts on health and education, IDD programs present age-appropriate, culturally sensitive messages for children and adults and offer cost-effective delivery systems. Community radio programs reach adult audiences, while curricular materials, teacher training, and Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) programs reach children and youth. IDD works closely with educators to use accurate information on HIV/AIDS and develop appropriate ways to teach what remains in many societies a taboo subject. IDD aims for a comprehensive approach to fighting HIV/AIDS, integrating it with other life skills interventions.
