Teacher Education

Today, preparing and recruiting high-quality teachers is more difficult than ever. Schools around the world are reeling as they try to respond to two converging developments—rapid, massive increases in enrollments and loss of teachers from absence, illness and death caused by HIV/AIDS. The glut in enrollment comes as many countries have increased access to schooling by abolishing school fees. However, it has left schools overpopulated with too few teachers, many who are untrained or poorly trained.
The cornerstone of the IDD approach is to collaborate with local partners, build on the strengths of existing systems, and draw from a wide variety of technologies and program designs that meet individual country needs. We work with head teachers, supervisors, and inspectors to build local capacity, empowering them to serve as mentors who encourage others to apply their newly learned techniques. We help schools pioneer innovative techniques such as project-based learning, active learning, and cooperative learning—all of which build the skills of both teacher and learner.
