Democratic Participation and Community Building

Empowering and educating people to participate as citizens in an evolving social and political order is one of the most important and challenging of tasks in human development today.
In developing countries, IDD helps individuals and communities rebuild from political, economic and even geographic instability. Working with local residents and their community leaders, IDD initiatives support basic literacy and numeracy education, peace and reconciliation skill-building, and civic participation and life skills education.
While securing a functioning, centrally governed education system can take years or even decades, IDD works to lay the groundwork quickly, using existing or easy-to-create channels to establish communications and launch essential educational programming.
Many of our initiatives feature Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI), which can be provided in almost any setting to children, youth, and adult learners.
