Educational Quality Improvement Program 1: Building Educational Quality through Classrooms, Schools, and Communities (EQUIP1)
EQUIP1 is a multi-faceted program designed to raise the quality of classroom teaching and the level of student learning by effecting school-level changes. EDC is one of 15 partners in this Leader-with-Associates mechanism and participates in both Leader Award and Associate Award activities. As part of a larger EQUIP1 Leader Award cross-national study on educational quality, IDD conducted a comparative research study on perceptions and practices related to education quality in Islamic schools in three states in Nigeria and in the primarily Muslim Region 5 of Ethiopia. This activity builds on previous studies IDD has conducted on Islamic schools in Nigeria and in Ethiopia. IDD researched what kind of instruction and pedagogy are found in these schools, how education quality is conceptualized, evaluated or measured, and how local voices, customs, and perspectives have helped or could help shape and inform appropriate USAID assistance to these schools. The research teams collected and analyzed qualitative and quantitative data via classroom observations, as well as interviews and oral questionnaires conducted with teachers, proprietors, and parents.
