Strategic Approach

Indian Education Digital Library

Dot-EDU T4 in collaboration with the Department of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Mysore has developed a digital library that hosts education content for primary and secondary levels. The digital library contains all of EDC’s educational content along with educational materials from the Department of State Education Research and Training Karnataka (DSERT), Azim Premji Foundation (APF) and other QUEST partners. The content is in the subjects of Mathematics, Environmental Science, Sciences, Social Studies, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Oriya languages. The digital library consists of two components. The first component of the digital library is a web interface including a searchable catalog of all the educational content provided by the organizations mentioned above; and also host short pdf and word educational content files. The web interface is searchable in English, Hindi and Kannada and allows browsing by keyword, title and subject. The second component of the digital library consists of large digital files including audio, video and CD ROM educational content.

The digital library is hosted by the National Informatics Center and is available on the url- www. edudl.gov.in (add link). The digital library is also hosted on the Gyanpedia website (gyanpedia.in) of Digital Empowerment Foundation, Delhi.

The digital library was successfully piloted in few schools, libraries, Block Resource Centers (BRCs) and a District Institute of Educational Training (DIET). Since then EDC is in discussions with the state government agencies to up-scale it to all BRCs and select schools.

In Chhattisgarh, the Rajiv Gandhi Shiksha Mission has provided 120GB hard drive to all clusters for hosting the digital library.  It is also in the process of installing it at all 16 District Project Offices and 60 Block Resource Centers.
