State of Jharkhand
Jharkhand, a new state formed in 2000, was selected as a dot-EDU pilot implementation area due to its educational backwardness. The English Is Fun Level 1 IRI series developed for Chhattisgarh was adapted for radio broadcast in Jharkhand. The series was launched on November 8, 2004 in the state, and is being broadcast state-wide since August 2006.
The main dot-EDU T4 initiatives in Jharkhand include:
English is Fun Level I: The programme targeting students of classes 1 and 2 is broadcast in government schools in all 24 districts in the state.
English is Fun Level II: The programme was introduced on a pilot basis in the year 2007-2007 and is currently implemented statewide. The programme targets students of classes 3 and 4 in the state.
Jhilmil: Jhilmil was introduced in 2007-2008 and reaches students of classes 3, 4 and 5 across the state.
The IRI programmes are being broadcast from five All India Radio stations in the state, namely, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Jamshedpur, Bhagalpur and Chaibasa. Keeping in mind, the cultural and linguistic diversities in the state, the teacher guides for the IRI programmes also incorporate directions to the teacher and translations for vocabulary are in two tribal dialects, Santhali and Nagpuri.
